Graylingwell Heritage Project

The Graylingwell Heritage Project is a community based heritage and arts programme concerned with preserving the history of the Graylingwell Hospital (formerly West Sussex County Asylum) from 1897-present. The project is currently securing funding through the Heritage Lottery Fund with a view to starting in December 2013 and running throughout 2014, resulting in several heritage and arts exhibitions in 2015. The Graylingwell Heritage Project is a partnership of several local organisations, namely Chichester Community Development Trust, University of Chichester, Pallant House Gallery and West Sussex Record Office with each partner leading an element of the project. These elements to include, heritage and history exploration of the Graylingwell Hospital, gathering of oral histories and related objects from the local community, Graylingwell archive preservation and an community based arts programme inspired by the collected histories. The Graylingwell Heritage Project is committed to the project ethos of challenging stigma of the Graylingwell Hospital and of mental health issues in the local community. The project will be offering a wide range of opportunities for volunteers to become involved in every aspect of the project and we hope to offer the chance for our community to put to together an exciting interpretation of the role Graylingwell Hospital has played in the Chichester area over the years.
